Putting the cummPutting the cummerbund the right wayerbund the right way

#TeachingsTuesdays

Last week, we got to know what a cummerbund is and the purpose of wearing it. This week, let’s learn how to wear it the right way.

First, wear your shirt and pants. Second, position the cummerbund in an upward direction. This means the pleats on the cummerbund must face upwards. Remember, downward-facing pleats are considered a fashion mistake. Third, place it on your waistline (the first half of the sash must cover the bottom part of the dress shirt and the second half must cover the top part of the pants) to give full coverage over the shirt and pants. Fourth, fasten the belt or the buckle.

What is a Cummerbund? What is the origin of it?

#TeachingsTuesdays

A cummerbund is a sash of cloth that men wear around their waist as part of their suit or tuxedo.

When the British army came to India, they felt hot due to the warmer climate and struggled to wear waistcoats during the evening or dinner. They saw Indians wearing a wide sash around the waist. And included this in their attire. Later, they introduced this in Tuxedo Park in New York and spread the fashion. Over the years, it became a dress code for British people and any formal attire.

“Every generation laughs at the old fashions but follows religiously the new.” — Henry David Thoreau

#MotivationalMondays

Henry, the great philosopher, and poet, wrote this in his book “Walden,” which was originally published in the 1850s. Perhaps it was the way that generation looked at fashion then. But today’s Zoomers (generation Z) don’t seem to fit in. To the extent they embrace new fashion, they show the same affinity and love for old fashion. Indeed, they praise a lot of old-fashion attires for their novelty, gorgeousness, and bespoke styles.

Who knows, this vogue may change in the decades to come. Nevertheless, let’s celebrate every fashion that comes and goes!
